Wheelside Adventures
Audio adventures in Falkirk
Wheelside makes immersive, self-guided audio walks around Falkirk. You walk a real route — the Falkirk Wheel, the Union Canal towpath, the trails of Canada Wood — and the story unlocks on your phone as you reach each point along the way. No guide to meet, no set start time, no printed map.
Some are gentle family expeditions with characters to meet. Others are folklore and full-blooded horror, written for people who want to be genuinely unsettled in the dark under the trees. This page explains how they work and lists everything currently live.
How a GPS-triggered audio walk works
Choose your adventure
Pick a story and a place — the canal basin at the Falkirk Wheel, or the woodland trails of Canada Wood.
Press begin and walk
An opening introduction sets the scene, then the soundtrack carries you along the route in your headphones.
Reach a checkpoint, unlock a chapter
Your position triggers the next scene automatically, so the story keeps pace with your own walking speed.
Finish and collect
Each completed adventure adds stamps and collectibles to your Wheelside passport.

Common questions
- What is a self-guided audio adventure?
- It is a walk you take on your own, at your own pace, with the story playing through your phone. There is no guide to meet and no fixed start time — you open the adventure, press begin, and each chapter plays as you reach the right spot on the route.
- How does the GPS triggering work?
- Every adventure has a set of checkpoints along a real Falkirk walking route. Your phone watches your location and, when you step inside a checkpoint, the next piece of narration unlocks automatically. You never have to hunt for a track number or read a map screen while you walk.
- What do I need to bring?
- A charged phone, headphones (or a small speaker if you are walking as a group), sensible footwear and a data connection for the first load. Adventures are designed for ordinary outdoor walking paths around Falkirk.
- Can children take part?
- Yes — family adventures such as Coggie the Otter at the Falkirk Wheel are written for younger walkers and last around half an hour. Horror adventures in Canada Wood are marked 16+ and are genuinely frightening, so please check the age guidance on each adventure page.
- Do I need to book a time slot?
- Self-guided adventures are not time-slotted: once you have access you can walk them whenever the route is open and it feels safe to do so. Live hosted events, such as the seasonal Terror Walk with actors, do run on set dates and are booked separately.
- Where do the adventures take place?
- All current routes are within a few miles of the Falkirk Wheel — the canal basin, the Union Canal towpath and the trails through Canada Wood.
